Veterinary Centrifuge
A centrifuge is a device that rapidly spins liquid samples to separate their components based on differences in density. In veterinary medicine, centrifuges are used to separate:
- Plasma or serum from blood
- Cells from body fluids
- Sediments in urine or feces
Simply put:
A centrifuge acts like a “spinning sieve,” using centrifugal force to push heavier components to the bottom and lighter components to the top.
How a Veterinary Centrifuge Works?
When a sample tube is placed in the centrifuge and spun at high speed, each particle inside the tube tends to move in a straight line. However, due to rotation, a force is exerted outward (centrifugal force), resulting in:
- Heavier particles (e.g., blood cells) moving to the bottom of the tube
- Lighter substances (e.g., plasma or serum) remaining at the top
Once the centrifuge stops, the different layers can be easily separated.
Types of Veterinary Centrifuges:
- Bench-top Centrifuge:
- Most common type in veterinary clinics
- Used for separating blood, urine, and light samples
- Capacity: 6 to 12 tubes per run
- Typical speed: 3,000–5,000 RPM
- Microcentrifuge:
- Designed for small samples (0.5–2 mL)
- Used in veterinary research and laboratory work
- High speed: up to 15,000 RPM
- Fixed-Angle Rotor Centrifuge:
- Tubes are held at a fixed angle (usually 45°)
- Particles settle faster
- Ideal for rapid separation of serum or plasma
- Swing-Out Rotor Centrifuge:
- Buckets swing out horizontally during rotation
- Provides more uniform layering of samples
- Excellent for clinical blood and urine tests
Applications in Veterinary Medicine:
Small Animals (Dogs, Cats, Rabbits):
- Serum separation for biochemical tests
- Plasma preparation for coagulation factor measurement
- Urine sample analysis for cellular sediments
Large Animals (Cattle, Sheep, Horses):
- Serum separation for metabolic disease assessment
- Antibody and serology testing
- Hematocrit analysis for anemia detection
Research or Veterinary Laboratories:
- Separation of cells, proteins, or microorganisms from culture media

Safety Guidelines and Proper Use:
- Balancing is crucial: Tubes must be symmetrically arranged by weight and volume on both sides of the rotor.
- Secure tube caps to prevent leakage during rotation.
- Keep the centrifuge lid closed and locked while operating.
- Never open the device while it is spinning.
- Clean the interior with alcohol or disinfectant after each use.
- In digital models, set time and speed (RPM) according to the sample type (e.g., whole blood: ~3,000 RPM for 10 minutes).
