A veterinary cell counter, also known as a hematology analyzer, is a device used to count and analyze the blood cells of animals. This device automatically measures the number and characteristics of blood cells, including:

  • Red Blood Cells (RBC)
  • White Blood Cells (WBC)
  • Platelets (PLT)
  • Hemoglobin (Hb)
  • Hematocrit (HCT)

In fact, the cell counter is the primary tool for performing a Complete Blood Count (CBC) in veterinary medicine. CBC is one of the most important diagnostic tests in animals.

How a Cell Counter Works:

Cell counters typically use two main methods to count cells:

  • Diluted blood passes through a narrow aperture
  • Each cell passing through the aperture changes the electrical resistance
  • The device records this change and calculates cell count and volume
  • This method is commonly used for counting RBCs, WBCs, and platelets
  1. Optical / Flow Cytometry Method:
  • Used in more advanced models
  • Cells pass through a laser or light beam
  • By analyzing light scatter patterns, the device identifies cell type and size
  • Used for more precise differentiation of white blood cells (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, etc.)

  • Differentiates white blood cells into three main groups:
