An electrocautery or electrosurgical unit is a device that uses high-frequency electrical current (High Frequency Current) to cut or burn animal tissues in order to:

  • Stop bleeding (hemostasis)
  • Cut or vaporize tissue
  • Act as a surgical alternative to a scalpel

In simple terms:

An electrocautery device is used for tissue cutting and hemostasis using heat generated by electrical current.

How It Works?

 

A veterinary electrocautery unit generates high-frequency alternating current (usually 500 kHz to 3 MHz). This current is delivered through a fine metal electrode (the cautery pencil) to the tissue, increasing the temperature of the cells.

Heat effects:

  • Around 60–70°C: Coagulation of blood and proteins
  • Above 100°C: Tissue cutting or vaporization

Depending on the device settings and waveform, the surgeon can choose between clean cutting or coagulation to seal blood vessels.

Types of Veterinary Electrocautery Devices:

  1. Monopolar Electrocautery
  • The most common type in general veterinary surgery
  • Current enters the body through the active electrode (pencil) and exits through a return electrode (grounding plate)
  • Used for cutting and coagulation in various body areas
  1. Bipolar Electrocautery
  • Both poles (positive and negative) are located at the tip of an instrument such as forceps
  • Current passes only between the two tips, making it safer and more precise
  • Used in delicate surgeries (eye, brain, small tissues)
  1. Portable (Handheld) Electrocautery
  • Suitable for small clinics or mobile veterinarians
  • Typically, battery-powered or rechargeable
  • Lower power output, used for general tasks or localized cauterization

Applications of Electrocautery in Veterinary Medicine:

  1. Small Animals (Dog, Cat, etc.):
  • Spaying/neutering
  • Tumor or wart removal
  • Bleeding control during skin or muscle incision
  • Dental or gum surgeries
  • Removal of necrotic or dead tissue
  1. Large Animals (Cattle, Horse, Sheep, Camel, etc.):
  • Dehorning
  • Treatment of skin papilloma
  • Udder/gland surgeries (in dairy cows)
  • Bleeding control in open wounds
  1. Advantages of Using Electrocautery
  • Reduced bleeding during surgery
  • Faster procedure compared to scalpel use
  • Lower infection risk due to the sterilizing effect of heat
  • High precision with minimal damage to surrounding tissues
  • Faster wound healing in some cases

Safety Precautions When Using Electrocautery:

  • Ensure proper placement and full contact of the grounding plate before turning on the device
  • For long-haired animals, the grounding site should be shaved and kept dry
  • Use protective eyewear during prolonged cutting
  • Adjust the output power (watts) based on tissue type and animal size
  • Use suction to remove smoke produced by tissue vaporization
