Veterinary Capnograph
A capnograph is a medical device used to measure the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in an animal’s exhaled air and display it both numerically (EtCO₂) and graphically (capnogram). In essence, it shows how much CO₂ the animal exhales, providing real-time monitoring of respiration, anesthesia depth, and circulation during surgery or hospitalization.
How a Capnograph Works in Veterinary Medicine:
The capnograph collects a sample of the animal’s exhaled air through the breathing tube or anesthesia mask.
The device’s infrared sensor (Infrared Absorption) measures the CO₂ concentration in each breath, and the results are displayed as:
- Capnogram: A graph showing changes in CO₂ during the breathing cycle.
- EtCO₂ value: The CO₂ concentration at the end of exhalation, measured in mmHg (millimeters of mercury).
Applications of a Capnograph in Veterinary Practice:
- Monitoring During Anesthesia:
- Evaluates the depth of anesthesia and performance of the ventilator.
- Provides alerts if breathing stops or the endotracheal tube becomes blocked.
- Diagnosis of Respiratory or Cardiac Problems:
- A drop or rise in EtCO₂ levels may indicate hypoventilation, cardiac arrest, or hyperventilation.
- Verification of Proper Endotracheal Tube Placement:
- The presence of CO₂ waves confirms that the tube is correctly placed in the trachea, not the esophagus.
- Monitoring Hospitalized Animals in the ICU:
- Used for assessing respiratory status in unconscious or semi-conscious patients.
Types of Veterinary Capnographs:
- Mainstream Capnograph:
- The sensor is placed directly in the breathing circuit.
- Provides faster response times, but is heavier and more expensive.
- Side stream Capnograph:
- A small tube carries the air sample to a separate sensor.
- Lighter and more commonly used in veterinary clinics.
Advantages of Veterinary Capnographs:
- Real-time monitoring of respiratory and cardiac function.
- Early detection of apnea or airway obstruction.
- Reduced risk of death or complications during anesthesia.
- Enables precise adjustment of ventilator settings.
Important Guidelines for Use:
- The device must be calibrated before each procedure.
- The sampling tube should be kept clear and dry.
- For small animals (such as cats or rabbits), thinner and more sensitive tubes should be used.
- Data interpretation must always be performed alongside clinical observation of the patient.
