A Wood’s lamp is a device that emits ultraviolet light (UV-A) with a wavelength of approximately 365 nm and is used to detect certain infections, skin disorders, and fungal diseases in animals.

How a Veterinary Wood’s Lamp Works?

The Wood’s lamp contains a special nickel oxide filter that allows only near-ultraviolet (UV-A) light to pass through. When the lamp’s light is shone on the animal’s skin or hair, bacteria, fungi, or specific pigments present will fluoresce, showing distinct colors under the light.

Applications in Veterinary Medicine:

 

  1. Diagnosis of Skin Fungi, especially Microsporum canis:
  • In pets like dogs and cats, fungal-infected areas glow yellow-green under the lamp.
  1. Evaluation of Skin Pigmentation Disorders:
  • Used to detect white spots, albinism, or hyperpigmentation on the animal’s skin.
  1. Identification of Certain Bacteria or Discharges:
  • Some bacteria in wounds or secretions fluoresce blue or green under the Wood’s lamp.
