Veterinary Autoclave
A veterinary autoclave is a device used to sterilize instruments, tools, and materials in veterinary clinics and centers. Its operation is based on steam under high pressure and temperature, meaning that by using pressurized steam, it destroys all bacteria, viruses, fungi, and resistant spores.
Simply put:
An autoclave is the device that completely disinfects and sterilizes a veterinarian’s surgical instruments to prevent the transmission of diseases between animals.
How a Veterinary Autoclave Works?
The autoclave works based on a simple physical principle:
If water steam is confined in a closed space under pressure, its temperature rises above 100°C. At this high temperature, proteins and microorganisms denature and are destroyed.
Autoclave Operation Steps (Summary):
- Loading Instruments: Clean instruments (free of blood or fat contamination) are placed inside the autoclave chamber.
- Closing the Door and Starting the Cycle: The door is tightly locked to maintain pressure.
- Generating Steam: Heating elements convert water inside the device into steam.
- Increasing Pressure: Steam is trapped in the chamber, raising the pressure to about 1–2 bar (15–30 psi).
- Sterilization: Instruments are held at approximately 121–134°C for 15–30 minutes.
- Steam Release and Drying: After the cycle, the steam is released and instruments are dried.
Types of Veterinary Autoclaves:
Autoclaves are classified based on design and functionality:
- Gravity Type (Class N):
- The simplest and most economical type
- Air is expelled by gravity from the bottom
- Suitable for solid, unwrapped instruments (e.g., forceps, scissors, needles)
- Commonly used in small veterinary clinics
- Semi-Vacuum Type (Class S):
- Equipped with a semi-vacuum pump for better air removal
- Suitable for instruments with holes or limited wrapping
- More reliable and efficient than Class N
- Pre-Vacuum Type (Class B):
- The most professional type
- Completely removes air using a vacuum pump
- Steam penetrates all areas of the instruments
- Ideal for complex, tubular, or wrapped instruments
- Used in large veterinary hospitals

- Sterilizing surgical instruments for small animals (dogs, cats):
- Forceps, scissors, tweezers, suture needles, scalpel blades
