Veterinary Electrocardiography (ECG)
A veterinary electrocardiograph (ECG) is a device that records and analyzes the electrical activity of an animal’s heart. It is one of the most important tools for diagnosing cardiac diseases, detecting arrhythmias, and assessing the overall cardiovascular health of animals. The ECG device measures and displays the electrical signals generated by the cardiac muscle on paper or a digital monitor, providing a visual representation of the heartbeat and cardiac function.
How a Veterinary ECG Works?
- Electrodes are placed on specific areas of the animal’s body (usually on the limbs and chest).
- These electrodes detect the electrical signals produced during the contraction and relaxation of the heart muscles.
- The device amplifies and filters these signals and displays them as graphic waveforms on a monitor or prints them on paper.
- By analyzing the waveform components (P, QRS, T), the veterinarian evaluates the heart’s performance.
Applications of ECG in Veterinary Medicine:
- Diagnosing arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) in animals.
- Monitoring the effects of anesthetic or cardiac drugs on heart function.
- Continuous cardiac monitoring during surgery or anesthesia.
- Detecting metabolic or electrolyte imbalances that affect the heart.
- Pre-anesthetic evaluation to assess heart health.
- Monitoring animals experiencing shock, weakness, or respiratory distress.
Types of Veterinary ECG Devices:
- Single-Channel ECG:
Records one lead at a time.
- Multi-Channel ECG (3 or 6 channels):
Records multiple leads simultaneously for higher accuracy.
- Portable ECG:
Small, lightweight devices suitable for clinics or field use.
- Surgical Monitoring ECG:
Devices used during anesthesia, providing continuous real-time heart monitoring.

- Early detection of cardiac abnormalities before severe symptoms appear.
- Reduced anesthesia risk in animals with underlying heart conditions.
- Safe and continuous monitoring during surgery or long procedures.
- Ability to track cardiac changes over time.

Important Notes for Proper ECG Use:
- The skin where electrodes are placed must be clean and moist to ensure good electrical contact.
- The animal should remain calm and still to minimize motion artifacts.
- In long-haired animals, shaving the electrode area may be necessary.
