Microkeratome (Keratotome) in Veterinary Medicine
The microkeratome (keratotome) is a mechanical or electromechanical instrument consisting of a very sharp steel or diamond blade capable of cutting a thin and uniform layer of the cornea. While commonly used in corneal and LASIK surgeries to create a corneal flap in human medicine, in veterinary medicine it is primarily used for:
- Corneal biopsies
- Treatment of deep corneal wounds
- Removal of opaque corneal tissue
The device operates by moving the blade across the corneal surface with micron-level precision, producing a smooth, uniform, and controlled incision without damaging the deeper layers of the eye.
