Ultrasound Therapy (Veterinary)
Ultrasound therapy is a common and effective veterinary physiotherapy method used to treat muscular, tendinous, joint, and soft tissue injuries in animals. It employs high-frequency sound waves to produce therapeutic effects in deep tissues without harming the skin or superficial layers.
The ultrasound therapy device consists of a high-frequency generator and a probe (transducer). The probe emits sound waves, usually at 1–3 MHz, and when applied to the animal’s skin (covered with a conductive gel), the waves penetrate underlying tissues.
These waves induce mechanical vibrations in cells and tissues, producing two primary effects:
- Thermal Effect:
- Increases tissue temperature
- Enhances blood flow
- Boosts metabolism
- Reduces muscle spasms
- Non-Thermal Effect:
- Stimulates cellular repair
- Improves nutrient and oxygen delivery to cells
- Accelerates wound healing
Applications in Veterinary Medicine:
- Muscle and tendon injuries: strains, minor tears, or tendonitis
- Joint problems: arthritis, inflammation, or post-surgical stiffness
- Soft tissue and wound repair: accelerates tissue regeneration and reduces inflammation
- Chronic pain relief: by stimulating nerve endings and increasing local blood flow
- Edema reduction: enhancing absorption of interstitial fluids

- Pulsed Mode:
- Non-thermal effect
- Promotes tissue repair in early stages of injury
Advanced veterinary devices usually allow frequency adjustment (1 or 3 MHz) and intensity control (W/cm²) to suit different animal species and treatment areas.
