Electrotherapy in Veterinary Medicine
Electrotherapy is a modern, non-invasive physiotherapy method in veterinary medicine that uses controlled electrical currents to stimulate muscles, reduce pain, accelerate tissue repair, and restore motor function in animals.
This therapy is particularly effective in animals suffering from neurological injuries, orthopedic surgeries, arthritis, or muscle atrophy, playing a crucial role in the rehabilitation process.
Mechanism of Action:
In electrotherapy, a mild electrical current is delivered through electrodes placed on the skin or target area. This current stimulates nerve fibers or induces controlled muscle contractions. Depending on the type of current, these stimulations can result in:
- Pain relief (Analgesia): By blocking pain signal transmission in peripheral nerves.
- Improved local blood flow: Enhancing oxygen and nutrient delivery to damaged tissues.
- Prevention of muscle atrophy: Particularly in animals that have been immobilized.

Types of Currents in Veterinary Electrotherapy:

- TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation):

- Commonly used for joint pain, arthritis, or post-surgical discomfort.

- Microcurrent Therapy:

- High Voltage Pulsed Therapy (HVPC):
- Applied for chronic wounds and to promote faster healing of damaged tissues.
