Veterinary Laparoscopy
Veterinary laparoscopy is one of the most advanced and modern surgical and diagnostic techniques in veterinary medicine, which has rapidly replaced traditional open surgery in recent years. Using specialized instruments and a high-resolution camera, the veterinarian can observe and operate inside the animal’s abdominal cavity or other body areas without the need for a large incision. Because it is minimally invasive, highly accurate, and offers shorter recovery time with less pain and infection, laparoscopy has become one of the essential tools in modern veterinary surgery.
The veterinary laparoscopic system has revolutionized the field of animal diagnostics and surgery. With minimal invasion and maximum precision, it enables veterinarians to examine internal organs and perform surgical procedures without creating large wounds. Steps of Laparoscopic Surgery in Veterinary Medicine:
- Anesthesia and Preparation:
The animal is anesthetized to prevent movement and pain. The surgical area is shaved, cleaned, and disinfected.
- Creating Small Incisions:
Usually, two to three small incisions (5–10 mm) are made on the skin.
- Insufflation with CO₂ Gas:
Carbon dioxide gas is introduced into the abdomen through an insufflator to separate the abdominal wall from internal organs and create sufficient viewing space.
- Insertion of the Laparoscope:
A camera is inserted through one of the trocars, transmitting live images to the monitor.
- Observation and Surgical Procedure:
The veterinarian examines internal organs on the screen and, if necessary, inserts surgical instruments through other trocars to perform the required operation.
- Completion and Suturing:
After the procedure, the gas is released from the body, and the incisions are closed with fine sutures. In most cases, the animal can stand and eat within a few hours or by the next day.
