The Iranian company Negin Homay Rahmat has developed portable DR detectors made in Germany, enabling wireless detector development. This advancement eliminates one of the major barriers to DR usage, namely the lack of portability. However, there is still a long way to go before DR can be compared to CR in this regard. The ability to optimize existing technology with DR detectors has initiated serious competition between CR and DR in small-scale imaging settings.

Today, it can be said that Digital Radiography (DR) is the latest advancement in radiography. DR technology rapidly transmits images to a computer, allowing for a timely and somewhat online diagnostic radiography process without wasting time. DR systems can be either fixed or mobile, making them suitable for any clinic or practice. Digital radiography systems are more expensive than CR (Computed Radiography), but they offer many advantages. The efficiency of X-ray diagnosis is measured by the detector’s quantum efficiency (DQE), which is around 60 to 65 percent for DR but only 30 percent for CR. Therefore, using DR allows for imaging livestock with a lower radiation dose. The high speed of image acquisition is another advantage of DR technology. The image quality with DR is excellent, while CR images are somewhat inferior to film X-ray systems.

However, the diagnostic accuracy between CR and film-based systems is comparable. DR systems provide high workflow speeds for imaging centers and accelerate the management of a larger number of livestock, which is especially important in outpatient settings where animals need to return home or to their holding areas. The time required between exposure and image acquisition is less than one minute.
