The most well-known method of water therapy for animals is the underwater treadmill. In this method, the animal is placed on a treadmill in an empty tank. The tank is then slowly filled with warm water as the animal moves. An important aspect of underwater treadmill therapy is that adjustments can be made based on the animal’s physical condition. For example, the treadmill speed can be adjusted to optimize treatment for each animal, or if the animal has painful joints, filling the tank to the level of the joints temporarily alleviates weight from the joints.
Water in the underwater treadmill creates a controlled environment where buoyancy and water resistance allow the skeletal and muscular systems to work more efficiently without impact and with forces applied to the joints. This means that movement in water aligns all axes and operates without interference from external factors (such as riders or uneven surfaces).
Additionally, variable water depth and optional incline provide exercise opportunities for animals with specific muscular issues. Increased hydrostatic pressure also enhances blood circulation, reducing heat and inflammation.
Pets in different conditions and with low activity may become overweight. If an animal’s activity level is low or if it overeats, its weight can increase just like in humans. In such cases, exercising can become challenging for the animal, and it may be reluctant to engage in strenuous activities to lose weight. Fortunately, water therapy, combined with a proper diet, can help resolve the issue of excess weight. Moreover, water therapy strengthens the animal’s muscles along with addressing various health issues and weight reduction.
