Veterinary radiology, also called diagnostic imaging, includes methods that utilize various rays like X-rays or other forms of radiation to capture images of animals’ bodies. These images are used to diagnose different diseases and problems in animals. Veterinary radiology uses ionizing or non-ionizing radiation, each serving a specific purpose and used for different goals. Veterinary radiology is divided into three categories:
– Diagnostic Radiology: This type of imaging is used for various parts of the body, such as the chest, abdominal areas, and the musculoskeletal system. It includes subcategories like ultrasound, MRI, and CT scan.
– Interventional Radiology: This method is used to treat non-cancerous diseases in animals.
– Therapeutic Radiology: This method is mainly used for treating different types of cancer in animals.
– Nuclear Radiology: In this method, radioactive materials are used for imaging the bodies of animals.
A veterinary radiology device is used for the rapid diagnosis of diseases and conditions in animals. It is utilized to diagnose various diseases, such as issues in the chest, abdomen, and musculoskeletal system. In situations like accidents or similar incidents, the radiology machine can assess the extent of damage to the bones or internal organs, allowing the veterinarian to choose the best treatment method. Since animal movement can disrupt the imaging during the use of the radiology machine, the animal is anesthetized with medication.
Radiology imaging must be performed by specialists because the machine uses X-rays, and it is essential to use the minimum allowable dose within the shortest time possible; otherwise, the animal’s tissues and cells may be damaged. Another important point when using this device is the use of lead in the walls of the room where radiology imaging is conducted. X-rays can pass through all solid, liquid, and gas materials, but lead has a high atomic number, preventing the radiation from passing through. Radiology machines come in three models: fixed, portable, and mobile.
